Two-stage screw air compressors can save energy compared to single stage screw compressors due to their design and operation. 

In a single stage screw compressor, air is compressed in a single compression process, which requires a high compression ratio. This causes an increase in temperature and energy consumption. On the other hand, in a two-stage screw air compressors , the compression process is split into two stages, each of which has a lower compression ratio. 

The first stage compresses the air to an intermediate pressure, reducing the compression ratio and associated temperature increase. The intermediate pressure air then passes through an intercooler, where it is cooled before it enters the second stage. The second stage further compresses the air to the final desired pressure. By splitting the compression process, the two stage screw compressor can operate more efficiently and consume less energy. 

In addition, the intercooler between the two stages is an important part of the energy-saving process. It reduces the temperature of the air between the stages, which reduces the work required for compression in the second stage. This also results in a longer service life for the compressor as there is less wear and tear on the compressor components due to lower operating temperatures.
